Proper Planting Techniques

Planting a tree is a gift for the present as well as an investment for future generations. There are many advantages to planting a new tree, including:

  • Add natural beauty and cool shade to your property

  • Improve air quality
  • Produce oxygen
  • Habitat for wildlife providing food, protection, and homes
  • Reduce the amount of storm water runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce the effects of flooding.
  • Can act as a windbreak
  • Add value to your property
  • ETC...

The best time to plant trees is during the dormant season, late fall after leaf drop to early spring before budbreak.Proper planting techniques are crucial to the health and survival of the tree.

  1. Locate all underground utilities prior to digging.
  2. Identify the trunk flare.
  3. Dig a shallow, broad planting hole. Holes should be 2-3 times wider than the root ball, but only as deep as the root ball.
  4. Remove the containers or cut away the wire basket.
  5. Check roots
  6. Place the tree at the proper height.
  7. Straighten the tree in the hole.
  8. Fill the hole gently, but firmly
  9. Stake the tree, if necessary. Studies have shown that trees establish more quickly and develop stronger trunk and root systems if they are not staked at the time of planting.
  10. Add 2-4 inches of mulch, keeping it at least a couple of inches away from the trunk
  11. Provide follow-up care. Keep the soil moist, but not water-logged. Water trees at least once a week, barring rain, and more frequently during hot, windy weather.
